El Mourouj's Environment in Numbers

El Mourouj is a suburb of Tunis that is situated in the south of the capital and is part of the Grand Tunis metropolitan area. El Mourouj is divided into 6 districts, which are numbered in ascending order, with El Mourouj 1 and El Mourouj 3-6 being part of the El Mourouj Commune (El Mourouj 2 is under Tunis' jurisdiction).

  • The city covers an area of 1270 hectares and is home to over 112 000 people.

  • Established in 1991, the city has experienced the rapid growth typical of new city suburbs, with an annual population growth rate of 10.19% from 1994-2004.

  • The entire El Mourouj area is widely residential (23 444 households), mixed with main roads that are lined with shops and services.

  • As an entirely urban area, the city has access rates to drinking water, the electricity grid, and the sewage system that are all near 100%. The city has multiple parks/green spaces.

The city is developing rapidly, with the El Mourouj Commune being home to:

  • Education: 50 kindergartens, 19 primary schools (2 private), 6 middle schools, 4 high schools (1 private), 1 public vocational training institute, a university hostel, a university city, and one institute for higher learning.

  • Health: a family planning center, 3 general health centers, 5 medical analysis laboratories, 2 emergency health centers, 17 pharmacies, and 2 radiology laboratories.

  • Culture: one house of culture, 2 children's clubs, 3 public libraries, 7 sports halls, and 1 sports center

  • Commerce: 10 banks, 4 shopping centers, a wholesale market, and the Bir Elgasaa industrial zone

As El Mourouj is an entirely urban area, problems that will face the city will be more typical of similar urban areas, i.e. rather pollution/littering and waste disposal. In El Mourouj 2 (Tunis district), there is also an air quality measurement station that measures O3 and CO levels (a 2015 report shows that both levels are within an acceptable range). The same district also borders the sabkha (salt flat) “Séjoumi”.
